Song of Songs Challah Cover
Song of Songs Challah Cover
This piece measures 21”x23”. It is made up from a one-of-a-kind hand painted and hand dyed indigo panel that overlays on wild flower dye prints. The opposite panel is made up of a patchwork of one of a kind fabric dyed in shibori indigo, wild flowers, and buckthorn natural dye.
About the imagery:
Inspired by text from Song of Songs 6:3:
אֲנִ֤י לְדוֹדִי֙ וְדוֹדִ֣י לִ֔י הָרֹעֶ֖ה בַּשּׁוֹשַׁנִּֽים׃
I am my beloved’s
And my beloved is mine;
He browses among the lilies.
There are multitudes of commentary on this text. In some, it refers to the cycles of influence lovers have over one another. In others, the relationship described is one regarding an individual and their route toward Teshuvah— returning to closeness with God and/or perhaps return to their own truth, the true meaning of what it is to be alive in this world.
Whatever your interpretation, this is a piece created in order to share intentions of keeping Shabbat sacred and also of keeping sacred one’s relationship to both our truest self and others in our lives.
